Background of the Study
Digital platforms have transformed rural agricultural banking by bridging geographical gaps and enhancing service efficiency. Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria has deployed a suite of digital tools—including online loan applications, mobile banking apps, and automated customer support systems—to make banking services more accessible to rural farmers. These platforms allow customers to manage their accounts remotely, receive real-time updates, and apply for credit with minimal physical interaction, which is particularly beneficial in regions where traditional branches are scarce (Adejumo, 2023).
Through digital platforms, the bank can tailor its financial products to the seasonal needs of agricultural communities, offering flexible repayment schedules and risk-adjusted credit limits. The incorporation of data analytics into these platforms further enables the bank to monitor borrower behavior, predict credit risk, and adjust loan terms dynamically. This increased transparency and efficiency not only reduce processing times but also build greater customer trust and financial inclusion (Ibrahim, 2024). Despite these advantages, challenges such as low digital literacy, inadequate internet connectivity, and cultural resistance to technology persist, limiting the full potential of digital platforms in rural areas. This study evaluates the effectiveness of digital platforms in enhancing rural agricultural banking and proposes measures to overcome the obstacles to widespread adoption (Akinola, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria has invested heavily in digital platforms to improve rural banking services, many rural customers still face barriers to effective use. In rural areas, limited internet access and low digital literacy significantly reduce the usability of online banking solutions, leading to delayed loan processing and customer frustration (Adejumo, 2023). Moreover, the integration of digital platforms with existing legacy systems is not seamless, resulting in data inconsistencies and operational inefficiencies. These issues contribute to an uneven level of service quality, which undermines the potential benefits of digital transformation in rural agricultural banking. This study aims to identify these critical barriers and to propose strategies for enhancing digital literacy, improving infrastructure, and ensuring seamless integration of digital tools with traditional banking systems (Ibrahim, 2024; Akinola, 2025).
